Best performed with a regular low-frequency curved array transducer or a high-frequency probe on small patients.

Assess in the supine and then RLD position. Semi-recumbent is an alternative if unable to turn lateral but less reliable.

Antral CSA in the RLD position is the most sensitive position for observing changes in gastric volume.

Observe the antrum for peristaltic contractions and measurements are most sensitive when taken between contractions when the antrum is biggest.
