  1. Small effusion: echo-free space in diastole less than 10 mm (approximately 300ml)
  2. Moderate effusion: echo-free space in diastole 10-20 mm (approximately 500ml)
  3. Large effusion: echo-free space in diastole greater than 20 mm (approximately 700ml).

Clinical significance (mild, moderate, or severe), depends on volume and symptoms. Intervention is indicated by clinical signs of tamponade and ultrasound.
